Paint

The difference between paint and the other options should be relatively obvious, as it will change the color of your door to whatever you select and it is longer lasting than stain. Paint is a popular option for those who wish to match the color of their home or business and would rather keep a consistent look. It cannot be easily removed.

The drawback is that paint may take away from the apparent beauty of the wood on your door, but if you have a color scheme or design for your home or business that is already in place it is a viable option. In our store, you can consider all of the available colors and make the proper selection for your desires.

Stain

Stain is a colorant that is dissolved in a solvent, which means that it will not seep into the pores of the wood and can be removed more easily than paint. Stain also deteriorates on its own more quickly than paint, though.

You may also find additional options with stain, including some that highlight the grain of your wood rather than covering up. If this is something you are interested in, it is one noticeable advantage over paint, which is far more likely to cover up your grain to an extent. There are also stains that will cover up the grain of your wood as well, so you need to make sure you make the right selection and consider the possibilities.

With many stains you will also need to apply a finish or varnish over the top in order to protect the stain from deterioration and provide a glossier finish and look.

Varnish

A varnish is a wood finish that is applied to either provide a glossy finish or to protect the wood and perhaps stain underneath. It is made out of materials including drying oil, resin and solvent. Varnish provides a glossy finish. However, there are alternatives now available that offer semi-glossy finishes. Varnish does not change the color of the wood below it, as it has minimal, if any, color in it. As a result it only provides a top layer finish to whatever color resides underneath.

After applying a layer of varnish, it needs to be given time to dry and harden, after which point it will be fully protecting the wood and finish underneath and providing all of its benefits. You should make sure you are aware of the necessary drying and curing time when making your selection, as this might impact you by either forcing you to leave your home while it dries or keeping you away from the door.

STEPS FOR OUR DOOR REFINISHING SERVICE;

  • We assess your door to determine the condition of the door. If any putty or caulk is needed we apply to the needed areas.
  • We remove the lockset from the door.
  • We sand the entire exterior of the door.
  • We then add concentrated stain to marine varnish. This will restore the original color to the door.
  • Lastly, we apply one coat of marine varnish to the exterior part of your door.

***Someone needs to be home 3-4 hours after job is completed while door dries.
